Getting familiar with the Toraso Process

Overview/Schedule

Two times a year, each member will be scheduled to prepare a presentation or interesting topic. Four weeks prior to the scheduled presentation, the topic will be chosen with a coordinator. A week later, an email, containing specific presentation information (including topic, due date, reviewer, and resources, - each to be explained in detail), will be sent to the presenter. Presentations will be uploaded on Thursdays. Discussion boards relating to each presentation will be open until the following Shabbos (eight days).

Topic

There are no specific guidelines regarding topic choice. However, presenters are encouraged to choose a topic that is of interest and stimulates thoughtful discussion and inquiry. Topics can also be chosen for you by a coordinator; or he can assist in deciding a reasonable and worthwhile topic to be studied and presented. Either way, the topic should be discussed with the coordinator to ensure that thorough research and investigation can be done, facilitating further understanding and increased mastery of the subject.

Resources

Members can use any relevant resources available to them, however, a coordinator will provide all pertinent resources for the topic. Presenters will need to apprise the coordinator of the extent to which they would like to research and present the topic. Additionally, each presenter will be assigned two Shoel Umeshivs, available to guide them throughout the preparation/research process.

Reviewer

Before presenting, the presenter will choose an “outside” reviewer (not a member) to watch/read the presentation. Preferably, the reviewer should be someone whose presence as an audience member will foster a sense of accountability.

Presentation

Presentations can be formatted in two ways: essay/article or recorded oral presentation. When presenting in essay/article form your presentation should be between 3.5 - 4 pages (1.5 spaced, font size 12). When presenting as an oral presentation it should be between 17-20 minutes. However, presenters are encouraged to be thorough, concise, and engaging.

Discussion

After each presentation is uploaded for viewing, other members will have access to a discussion board. Members are encouraged to analyze, question, and discuss the material that has been presented.
